Day Programs

Vist the library with your day program!

Madison Public Library offers tailored programs, accessible resources, and welcoming spaces for day program visits from adults and youth with disabilities.

What is a Day Program visit?

The library provides a welcome space for all individuals, including those with a variety of special needs including but not limited to physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. We welcome day programs for both spur of the moment and pre-planned visits. These can be visits where the day program folks interact with the library building and materials independently or they can visits where folks work with library staff on a particular planned activity. Ideally library staff prefer to know ahead of time before groups come for a visit in case other events are happening at the same time in the library and a visit at a particular time may not be as enjoyable as it could be at another time.

How Do Schedule a visit?

Administrators/Activities Directors of locations can call the library at 440-428-2189 to request a day program visit. Ideally a staff person will be able to schedule something for you at that time, but if not, someone will be back in touch as soon as possible.

Types of visits:

There can be spur-of-the-moment visits and there can be pre-planned visits and the library works to accommodate both.

Spur-of-the moment visits –These can be visits where a group had a previous plan that fell through due to weather or any number of other issues. The library is happy to help groups fill their now open time blocks with a trip to the library.

  • Movie and Lunch – We have had groups that call first thing in the morning and ask whether we have a meeting room available for their group to bring their lunch and watch a movie. Our large meeting room has a microwave for anyone who needs their lunch warmed up, as well as a sink. It is ADA accessible and we have the ability to show DVDs and Blu-rays on the television in there. Group leaders can find a movie within the library’s collection and the group settle in to eat and watch.
  • Checking out materials – see below for information on individual and group library cards.
  • Puzzles – We have had groups that just like puzzles sometimes they need a change of location. We have places in the building where puzzles are set up or we may have a meeting room free. Groups can borrow puzzles to take to their day program locations or they can come and hang out in the library working on any number of different puzzles.

Pre-planned visits – Depending on what type of activity is planned, a visit can be set up in as little as 24 hours or needing a 7-10 day notice.

  • A craft program in the CreateSpace – The library has a selection of different crafting programs. Some use CreateSpace machines and others do not. There is typically a per person cost associated with this program, and the staff member working with the group to schedule their visit will talk with them about costs and how much lead time is necessary for procuring materials.
  • Stories & STEM – A library staff member will lead a developmentally appropriate storytime and coordinating science activity. Typically these would be books and activities appropriate for the mental ages about roughly 3-10 years old.
  • Book Discussion – A library staff member will lead a developmentally appropriate book discussion for people gathered at the library. This typically would happen once a month or once a quarter.
  • Storytime – A library staff member will lead a developmentally appropriate storytime. Typically these would be books and activities appropriate for the mental ages about roughly 3-10 years old and happening either once a month or once a quarter.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Activities – The library has a lot of different materials, including robotic Legos, that can be used with groups of different sizes and abilities. These types of activities, especially Legos, are good for practicing or reinforcing other social skills including teamwork, problem solving, and sequencing. When scheduling this activity available days and times will be based on which staff members lead which individual programs and what their openings are.

Other Services

Interactive Video Storytime: The library offers video storytimes through Zoom. Groups log-on at a predetermined time and they can participate in storytime. The library provides manipulatives like shaker eggs, rhythm sticks, bubbles, etc. so day program attendees can participate along with the staff member. Sometimes these are offered for a 6-8 weeks session or they can be monthly.

Participating in Library Programs: The library is happy to have day program groups participate in previously advertised library programs. Please reach out to the library to make sure there is space available for the group, and that staff member will get the group registered if that is needed.

For programs located in Madison: The library can visit day programs located in Madison. They can bring the bookmobile, which is wheel chair accessible. They can also bring out carts of books to roll into facilities for program attendees to select their own materials but in a location that they feel more comfortable. This is called a lobby stop. Library staff can also come to do month or quarterly programs like storytimes, STEM activities, or technology programs. Some CreateSpace machines can be brought outside the building as well. That is something that can be worked out with the staff member leading the program.

Home Delivery: Madison Public Library offers free delivery. No matter why the library is out of reach – disability, health or transportation – we deliver books, books on CD, magazines, movies, music CDs and puzzles two Wednesdays per month. Click here for more details.
